Kathmandu (Nepal) – Nepal has expanded curfew and prohibitory orders to more areas after communal violence in Koshi and Madhesh provinces claimed a third life on Thursday. Latest Deaths A 15-year-old, Ganesh Yadav of Tulsipur near Golbazar in Siraha district, died during clashes in Golbazar market on Thursday. He was being treated at a local hospital. In Sunsari district of Koshi province, Jaya Prakash Mehta died while undergoing treatment at a neuro hospital in Biratnagar. He was among those injured in Sunday’s violence in Dewangunj Rural Municipality. The Sunsari incident on Sunday left 1 dead and over a dozen injured, including security personnel, after police fired to disperse groups clashing during religious community celebrations in Kaptangunj, Dewangunj. Dewangunj Rural Municipality Chairman Bechan Mehta announced NRs 1 million compensation each for the two killed in that violence. Curfew And Restrictions Extended With the latest clashes, authorities imposed indefinite curfew in parts of Dhanusa, Siraha and Birgunj in Madhesh province on Thursday. Siraha: Curfew in Golbazar was extended to Lahan Municipality. Protesters had also set a shopping mall on fire in Golbazar. Dhanusa: Areas including Laxminia Hatbazaar, Belauni Road, Nagarain Municipality, Dudhmati bridge and Janakpur were placed under curfew from 3:30 pm. Parsa: Prohibitory orders were issued in parts of Birgunj Metropolitan City from 5 pm Thursday to 6 am Friday. The order covers Pratima Chowk to Shankaracharya Gate and bans gatherings of 5+ people, rallies and sit-ins. Sunsari: Curfew imposed since Monday continued indefinitely. Officials said it now covers 10 areas including the East-West Highway, though the situation is “gradually improving”. Government Response PM Balendra Shah chaired the 43rd National Security Council meeting to review law and order and the unrest in Sunsari. President Ramchandra Paudel appealed for communal harmony and unity, calling goodwill and brotherhood a key part of Nepal’s identity. He urged authorities to conduct a neutral probe and take strict action against those responsible. MPs including Basna Thapa of Nepali Congress and Oren Rai of Shram Sanskriti Party also raised concerns about rising tensions in southern districts in Parliament. Sunsari, which borders Bihar, India, is a key transit and trade corridor. Several districts in Madhesh and Koshi also share the India border.
