New Delhi: Former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar presided over a symbolic “public impeachment” proceeding against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar organized by the INDIA bloc, seated on a historic chair once used by India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. Sharing details of the event on social media platform X, Congress media and publicity department head Pawan Khera noted the symbolic weight of the furniture. He stated that the chair had been used by Nehru throughout his tenure as Prime Minister, witnessing pivotal decisions in modern Indian history. Invoking that legacy, Khera added that Kumar presided over the mock session to declare the CEC unfit to remain in office. The symbolic session, structured along the lines of parliamentary proceedings, was staged on the lawns of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge’s official residence at 10, Rajaji Marg. Opposition lawmakers, senior leaders, and members of civil society assembled to pass a resolution “impeaching” the election chief, alleging widespread voter deletion and electoral manipulation. Moving the motion, Kharge accused the Election Commission of compromising the franchise of citizens and functioning under the influence of the ruling government. Addressing the gathering, Rahul Gandhi termed the public impeachment exercise a “political weapon” aimed at holding officials accountable for alleged electoral discrepancies.
