The Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) is a long-term savings and retirement scheme for salaried employees in India. You can open an EPF account if your basic salary + DA is up to ₹15,000 per month. If it’s above ₹15,000, you can also opt for Voluntary Provident Fund (VPF).

EPFO members can withdraw funds fully or partially based on eligibility. Partial withdrawal is allowed before retirement, while final settlement is processed only after leaving a job.

Linking Aadhaar with UAN is now mandatory for services like fund withdrawal, transfer, and claim settlement. While employers usually do it, you can also do it yourself via the Umang app.

How To Link Aadhaar With UAN On Umang App – Step by Step

  1. Download the Umang app from Google Play Store or Apple App Store
  2. Register using your Aadhaar-linked mobile number and create a 4-digit M-PIN for login
  3. After login, go to EPFO > e-KYC Services
  4. Tap on “Aadhaar Seeding” and enter your UAN
  5. Enter the OTP sent to your registered mobile number and submit your Aadhaar details
  6. A second OTP will be sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile/email for verification
  7. Once verified, your Aadhaar will be linked to UAN. The update reflects in the EPFO database within 24 hours

How To Check Aadhaar Linking Status On EPFO Portal

  1. Log in to the EPFO member portal with your UAN and password
  2. On the homepage, click “Profile Information” on the right
  3. If linked, your masked Aadhaar number will appear with the status “Verified”

Note: EPFO has now moved UAN activation and new UAN generation to the Umang app only. It requires Aadhaar-based Face Authentication (FAT). This change comes after a major system upgrade aimed at faster and more reliable services.

Other EPF Updates For FY 2025-26

  • Interest Rate: Finance Ministry has approved 8.25% interest for EPF and VPF contributions for FY 2025-26. Interest credit was expected to be completed by 15 July 2026. This is the third year in a row with 8.25% rate.
  • Tax Benefits: Employee contribution up to ₹1.5 lakh/year is exempt under Section 80C in the old tax regime. Employer contribution up to 12% and below ₹7.5 lakh is exempt in both old and new regimes. Interest on employee contribution is tax-free up to ₹2.5 lakh.
  • Withdrawal Rule: You must maintain 25% minimum balance in EPF at all times. That means you can withdraw a maximum of 75% during partial withdrawal.

Example: If your total EPF balance is ₹2 lakh, you can withdraw up to ₹1.5 lakh and must keep ₹50,000 in the account.
