NEW DELHI — In response to demonstrations led by the “Cockroach Janta Party” (CJP) demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, a counter-group named the “Lal Hit Janata Party” held its inaugural membership assembly on Sunday at Malviya Smriti Bhawan in the capital.

The newly formed group, headed by Ayan Bhatnagar, strongly condemned the ongoing agitations in Connaught Place and other commercial zones across Delhi. Speakers accused the CJP, the Congress party, and student outfits like the All India Students’ Association (AISA) of attempting to erode trust in key constitutional institutions, law enforcement, and the democratic process.

Defense of Constitutional Institutions

Addressing the gathering, Bhatnagar argued that mounting public pressure campaigns to unseat constitutionally appointed officials threatens governance stability. He highlighted that under the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Act, 2023, the Leader of the Opposition is already part of the statutory selection panel.

Responding to remarks by activist-lawyer Prashant Bhushan regarding political change, Bhatnagar questioned the legitimacy of seeking government overhauls through street agitation rather than electoral mandates, asserting that a gathering of demonstrators cannot dictate constitutional appointments.

Impact on Retail and Commercial Activity

The leadership emphasized that persistent protests in central shopping hubs like Connaught Place during the peak festive corridor between Dussehra and Diwali are inflicting heavy financial damage on local traders.

  • Economic Concerns: Event speakers alleged that commercial disruptions across metropolitan areas have already led to business losses exceeding ₹3,000 crore, warning the impact could escalate significantly if key markets remain blocked.
  • Law and Order: The group raised concerns over reported misconduct toward Delhi Police personnel during crowd-control operations, stating that intimidation or verbal hostility aimed at security personnel will face strong civic resistance.

Mobilization Plans

Stating that the initiative aims to protect democratic norms and unify nationalist supporters, Bhatnagar claimed the outfit has drawn interest both domestically and from Indian diaspora members in Canada and the United Arab Emirates. Cultural figures, including Kathak exponent Richa Gupta, also spoke at the convention, advocating youth engagement that strengthens national institutions rather than street-level disruptions.
