Speculation surrounding Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and TVK leader Vijay’s position on parliamentary delimitation was addressed following his recent participation in the 31st Southern Zonal Council meeting. Speaking at the council meeting chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Vijay emphasized that states that successfully implemented population control measures should not face a reduction in their parliamentary representation. Following his remarks, the Congress party publicly backed the demand to maintain the current distribution of Lok Sabha seats for the next 25 years. Senior Congress leader and former Union Minister P. Chidambaram stated on social media platform X that the current total of 543 Lok Sabha seats should remain unchanged, ensuring Tamil Nadu retains its existing allocation of 39 seats. He noted that this position reflects resolutions previously passed by both the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly and the Congress Working Committee. Chidambaram expressed satisfaction that political parties across the state, including the ruling DMK and TVK, share a unified stance on the issue. The central concern revolves around the expiration of the freeze on seat allocation based on the 1971 Census. Leaders across southern states have voiced apprehension that a redrawing of constituencies based strictly on updated population figures could diminish their collective political voice in Parliament despite their significant achievements in economic growth and human development. Additionally, the resolution previously passed by the Tamil Nadu Assembly requested that the 33 percent reservation for women be implemented in the 2029 Lok Sabha elections based on the existing 543-seat framework without delay.
