Union Home Minister Amit Shah reiterated the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) commitment to establishing transparent governance and law in West Bengal during his official visit to North Bengal. Speaking at the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) frontier headquarters in Siliguri, Shah stated that the party aims to replace an environment of apprehension with public trust and dignity for all citizens. During the event, which featured foundation stone laying ceremonies for multiple SSB infrastructure projects alongside Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, the Home Minister addressed security and legal developments in the region. Key Highlights from the Address Implementation of Legal Reforms: Shah criticized previous Trinamool Congress (TMC) administrations for delaying the adoption of India’s updated criminal legal codes—the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA). He emphasized that these codes enable faster judicial processes, including the capability to lodge Zero FIRs at any police station. Citizenship and Border Security: The Home Minister noted past opposition to the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) within the state and affirmed the government’s resolve to address illegal immigration through standard detection and deportation protocols. Governance and Public Safety: Shah highlighted that the current state leadership under Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has prioritized law enforcement and the safety of residents across West Bengal. Following the SSB program, the Home Minister was scheduled to visit Kawakhali Maidan in Siliguri to launch an exhibition showcasing the framework and benefits of the new legal system.
