India’s southwest monsoon has gained strength again, bringing widespread rain across large parts of North, East and Northeast India. In its latest update on Monday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said active monsoon conditions will continue this week. Several states are likely to see heavy to extremely heavy rain, along with thunderstorms, lightning, strong winds, landslides and possible flash floods. Why It’s Raining More The IMD said the monsoon trough is running from Ganganagar to Delhi, Lucknow, Ranchi and Digha, extending toward the northeast Bay of Bengal. At the same time, upper-air cyclonic circulations over different regions are boosting rainfall. This is leading to widespread showers over the northern plains, Himalayan belt and eastern states. Red Alert For Himalayan States The western Himalayan region is expected to see the worst weather. Red Alert has been issued for parts of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, J&K and Ladakh. Some places may record over 204.5 mm of rain, raising risks of landslides, flash floods and rising river levels. Hill districts are already reporting blocked roads, waterlogging and slope cuts. Authorities have asked residents and tourists to avoid non-essential travel, especially in landslide-prone zones, and to follow official advisories. Delhi-NCR On Orange Alert Delhi, Noida, Gurugram and Ghaziabad saw heavy morning showers on Monday. The rain brought relief from heat and humidity but also led to traffic snarls and waterlogging. IMD has put Delhi-NCR under an Orange Alert. The forecast is for heavy to very heavy rain with thunderstorms and winds of 30-40 kmph over the next few days. Day temp: 32°C to 34°C Night temp: 25°C to 27°C Heavy Rain Likely In More States Orange Alert issued for: Assam, Meghalaya, Bihar, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim. These areas may get 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm of rain in isolated spots. Yellow Alert issued for: Arunachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, East Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Kerala and other NE states. Expect moderate to heavy rain with chances of localized flooding. Thunderstorms, Winds And Temperature Drop IMD has warned of thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds in many parts. Wind speeds of 40-50 kmph are likely over parts of Andhra Pradesh, J&K, North Interior Karnataka, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Bihar, Rajasthan, MP, Telangana, Coastal & South Interior Karnataka and Andaman & Nicobar Islands. Continuous rain has cooled down much of North India. On Sunday, Churu, Rajasthan recorded the highest max temp at 41.6°C, while Malegaon, Maharashtra recorded the lowest min temp in the plains at 10.3°C. Advisory For Public And Farmers IMD has advised people to: Avoid waterlogged areas and stay indoors during lightning Follow local administration alerts For farmers: Ensure proper drainage in fields Harvest mature crops if possible Store produce in dry, safe places Keep livestock sheltered during heavy rain and strong winds With multiple weather systems active, officials are closely tracking the situation. People in flood and landslide-prone areas are urged to stay alert as widespread rain is expected to continue.
