In an initiative aimed at strengthening student healthcare infrastructure, the Delhi government will establish dedicated medical rooms across all 1,086 state-run schools. Announcing the policy on Sunday, Delhi Education Minister Ashish Sood confirmed an allocated expenditure of ₹48.87 crore to ensure students have immediate access to supervised first aid and emergency stabilization during campus hours.

Core Healthcare Facilities Provided

The initiative focuses on offering immediate triage and basic medical care to children experiencing routine injuries, sudden sickness, or acute discomfort during the school day.

  • Primary First-Aid Care: Treatment of minor abrasions, cuts, bruises, burns, and wound dressings.
  • Supervised Rest: A quiet, monitored rest area for students suffering from fatigue, heat exhaustion, fever, or mild physical distress.
  • Oral Rehydration Therapy: Provision of Oral Rehydration Solutions (ORS) and clean drinking water to counter dehydration.
  • Dedicated Healthcare Personnel: Operations will be overseen by qualified health workers, such as Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs) or trained paramedical staff.
  • Support for Menstrual Health: Safe, hygienic spaces offering privacy, guidance, and assistance for female students during school hours.

Strict Treatment Protocols and Service Limits

To safeguard student welfare and prevent unauthorized interventions, clear operational boundaries have been established:

  • Exclusion of Prescription Drugs: No schedule medications or prescription drugs will be dispensed or stored in the school medical rooms.
  • No Diagnostic Lab Services: Campuses will not conduct blood tests, pathology work, or clinical diagnostics.
  • Hospital Referral Network: In instances involving severe trauma, fractures, or critical illnesses, designated personnel will administer initial stabilization and coordinate immediate transfer to nearby government healthcare centers or hospitals.

Infrastructure Rollout

The ₹48.87-crore rollout will be implemented systematically across the Directorate of Education (DoE) network:

  1. Immediate Setup: Converting existing, underutilized rooms in campuses with surplus built-up space into fully equipped first-aid facilities.
  2. Modular Units: Installing prefabricated or modular porta-cabins fitted with examination couches, first-aid inventories, and basic medical equipment in campuses facing space constraints.

This move aligns with student wellness and safety benchmarks outlined in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
