Months after the row over Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, the Election Commission has launched a major public outreach and credibility drive. The poll body unveiled new digital tools, pledged to restart voter awareness programmes in schools and colleges, and held its first nationwide media meet with over 350 journalists in attendance. Why The Push Now The EC described SIR as a regular exercise to update voter lists. However, Opposition parties have been criticising it for months, alleging arbitrary deletion of voters and tough documentation demands. The process led to protests, court cases, and questions over the Commission’s neutrality. EC officials have denied the charges, saying the revision follows legal procedures and that voters have multiple chances to file objections or get names restored. With trust under scrutiny, the Commission now appears to be focusing on transparency and public engagement instead of just defending the process. Key Initiatives Announced Revival of Electoral Literacy Clubs The EC will reactivate clubs in schools and universities to educate first-time voters. The programme will include quizzes, mock polls, debates, registration drives and sessions on constitutional values. Officials said the aim is to build awareness among youth well before they turn 18. By combining direct media interaction, tech upgrades, and youth outreach, the poll body is trying to make the electoral process more accessible and accountable ahead of upcoming elections.
