Acclaimed South Indian actress and Padma Shri recipient Sowcar Janaki passed away on Friday at a private hospital in Chennai due to age-related health issues. She was 94. Born on December 12, 1931, Janaki enjoyed a prolific multi-decade career across Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam cinema. She made her silver screen debut in L.V. Prasad’s landmark Telugu film Shavukaru, which earned her the enduring moniker ‘Sowcar.’ She later made her Tamil debut with Valaiyapathi in 1952. Throughout her distinguished career, she delivered memorable performances in classics such as the 1959 Kannada hit Mahishasura Mardini alongside Dr. Rajkumar, as well as critically acclaimed films like Iru Kodugal, Thiruneelakantar, Batasari, and Pudhiya Paravai. Her final film appearance was in the 2023 Telugu family drama Anni Manchi Sakunamule, directed by Nandini Reddy. In recognition of her immense contributions to Indian cinema, Janaki was honored with the Padma Shri, multiple Nandi Awards, and the prestigious Kalaimamani award.
