Nvidia is in preliminary discussions to either acquire or expand its financial backing in U.S.-based artificial intelligence startup Reflection AI, according to a report from the Financial Times citing sources close to the negotiations.

While negotiations remain early and may not result in a final agreement, the structure under review could involve a conventional buyout, an increased equity stake, or an “acqui-hire.” In an acqui-hire arrangement, big-tech firms bring over key technical personnel and secure intellectual property licensing rights, a route frequently utilized to navigate rigorous antitrust examination.

Financial specifics of the prospective transaction remain undisclosed. Nvidia previously directed $800 million into Reflection AI, a developer specializing in open-weight AI architectures that secured a $25 billion valuation during its funding round in March. Beyond direct ownership changes, discussions could yield an agreement granting Reflection AI broader access to Nvidia’s hardware inventory and computing infrastructure.

Nvidia leadership, including chief executive Jensen Huang, has repeatedly voiced support for robust open-weight AI ecosystems. Sources familiar with the ongoing talks indicate that an agreement could materialize in the coming weeks, though either side may still opt to end discussions. Neither Nvidia nor Reflection AI issued an immediate comment regarding the report.
