New Delhi The government on Friday said the recent 67% hike in passport fees was the first revision in 14 years. It also told the Lok Sabha that passport and related service charges are revised from time to time after reviewing costs, operational requirements and improvements in service delivery. Why The Fee Was Increased In a written reply, Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh said the last revision in passport fees was done in 2012. “In the last 14 years, costs of various items and expenditure on providing services have gone up. Hence a revision in passport fees became necessary,” he said. New Passport Fee Structure From July 1, 2026 The government has amended the Passports Rules, 1980 to revise the fee structure. The revised rules came into effect from July 1, 2026. Under the new rules: Fee for a new 36-page ordinary passport has been increased from Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,500 The minister added that passport fees were earlier revised in 1971, 1980, 1993, 2002 and 2012.
