Natarajan Chandrasekaran has announced that he will not apply for a second term as Chairman of Tata Sons. The announcement signals a major leadership shift at India’s largest business group.

Chandrasekaran, 63, said the decision was linked to insufficient support from the board following differences with Tata Trusts over key group matters. His current term will end in February 2027, and he will continue in the role until then.

Reasons Behind the Exit

Tata Sons is controlled by Tata Trusts, which holds a 66% stake. Sources said tensions had been building for months over:

  1. Listing Plans: A push for clarity that Tata Sons would remain unlisted
  2. Group Performance: Concerns around financial losses in Air India and large investments in new areas like chip manufacturing and battery plants
  3. Board Dynamics: In February, the board postponed a vote on his reappointment after objections were raised. No consensus was reached in the following 6 months

A person familiar with the matter said these disagreements were the main reason behind his decision to exit.

Impact on Markets

Following the announcement, shares of major Tata companies slipped.

  • TCS fell nearly 4%
  • Tata Motors dropped over 1%
  • Tata Steel and Titan also ended lower

Market experts described the reaction as short-term, noting that stability should return once a new chairman is named.

Chandrasekaran’s Legacy

He joined the Tata Group in 1987 and rose to become CEO of TCS before taking charge of Tata Sons in 2017. During his 9-year tenure he led major moves including:

  • Reviving Tata Motors and Tata Steel
  • Bringing Air India back under the Tata umbrella
  • Expanding into semiconductors, EVs, and electronics manufacturing

What Happens Next

Tata Sons oversees 30+ companies across tech, auto, steel, aviation, and retail. The board is expected to begin the process to select the next chairman ahead of the company’s AGM on August 18, 2026.

Tata Trusts has not issued an official statement yet. The change comes amid heightened scrutiny of the group following the passing of Ratan Tata last year.
