Veteran playback singer S. Janaki breathed her last on Saturday, July 11, 2026, in Mysuru. She was 88.

She was rushed to Apollo Hospital in the early hours after developing health complications. Despite being in the ICU and receiving intensive treatment, she suffered a cardiac arrest and passed away later in the evening, the hospital confirmed.

Janaki, who lived in Bogadi, Mysuru, leaves behind a legacy of over 48,000 songs. Her voice defined melodies in Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and many other Indian languages over a career of six decades.

In a heartfelt note, her granddaughter Apsara Vydyula wrote that Janaki “left us peacefully, surrounded by the love of her family,” calling her both “an iconic voice to the world” and “a loving grandmother to us.” From film classics to TV and radio, Janaki’s voice was part of millions of memories across India.
