New Delhi — Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, party General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and several other Congress leaders held a protest near the Prime Minister’s residence on Tuesday. They were demanding PM Narendra Modi’s resignation over alleged police action against students.

Later, police detained Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and several other leaders and took them away in buses. Priyanka Gandhi was seen resisting while being escorted to the bus.

What Happened At The Protest
Congress leaders staged the demonstration near 7 Lok Kalyan Marg. They raised slogans including “PM Resign”, “No to Hooliganism” and “Justice For Students”.

Shortly after the protest began, police detained Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and other leaders. Earlier in the day, MPs Charanjit Singh Channi, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Shashi Kant Senthil and others were also taken into custody.

During the protest, Congress leaders wore handcuffs as a symbolic protest against the police action on students.

Govt Reached Out Before Detentions

Before the detentions, Minister of State in the PMO Jitendra Singh and Home Secretary Govind Mohan arrived at the spot and urged Rahul Gandhi to end the protest.

Addressing the gathering, Rahul Gandhi called on citizens who want justice for students to join the protest. He said, “An attack on students is an attack on every Indian family. The government must take responsibility.”

He also demanded the resignation of PM Narendra Modi and the Union Home Minister, alleging that the government is avoiding accountability and not allowing discussion in Parliament.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said the opposition wants to discuss the issue in the House but is not being allowed to speak. Referring to the police action against students, she demanded the Education Minister’s resignation.

Hospital Visit Earlier In The Day

Before the protest, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi visited RML Hospital to meet students who were injured.

Other leaders present at the protest included Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal, Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivakumar, and senior leaders Jairam Ramesh, Randeep Surjewala, Pawan Khera and several MPs.
