New Delhi More than 5.9 crore Income Tax Returns have been filed for Assessment Year 2026-27 till the July 31 deadline, the Income Tax Department said on Saturday. The last date to file ITR-1 and ITR-2 without late fee and interest for taxpayers not requiring an audit was July 31, 2026. Filing Numbers This Year Vs Last Year In comparison, over 7.3 crore ITRs were filed by September 16, 2025 for AY 2025-26, which was the extended deadline that year. The I-T department announced the latest numbers in a post on X: “Over 5.9 crore ITRs filed for AY 2026-27 by July 31st!” Who Files ITR-1 And ITR-2? ITR-1 ‘Sahaj’ is the simpler form used by most small and medium taxpayers. A resident individual can file Sahaj if annual income is up to Rs 50 lakh and income sources include salary, one house property, and agriculture income up to Rs 5,000 per year.
