Tejashwi Yadav Urges PM Modi to Visit Flood-Hit Bihar, Demands ₹5,000 Crore Relief Package

Patna – Leader of Opposition in the Bihar Assembly, Tejashwi Yadav, has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting an immediate visit to the state’s flood-affected regions and urging swift central intervention. Criticizing the state administration’s handling of the crisis, the RJD leader submitted a seven-point demand charter seeking substantial financial and operational assistance from the Centre.

In his letter, Yadav alleged that the state government has shown severe apathy toward flood victims, claiming that fiscal mismanagement has left Bihar unprepared for disaster mitigation. He contended that contingency reserves and disaster relief funds were diverted to meet routine government expenditures earlier in the year, causing an acute fund shortage during the current emergency.

Key Demands Raised in the 7-Point Charter:

1. National Disaster Status: Declare Bihar’s prevailing flood situation a national calamity.
2. Financial Package: Immediately release a special flood relief package of ₹5,000 crore.
3. Logistics & Mobility: Deploy extra rescue boats, motorized vessels, and transport assets to cut-off and severely inundated zones.
4. Defense Support: Enlist the Indian Army and Indian Air Force helicopters for search, rescue, and airdrop operations in isolated areas.
5. Essential Supplies: Ensure an uninterrupted supply of clean drinking water, food packets, emergency medicines, cattle fodder, and makeshift shelters.
6. Direct Financial Aid: Provide targeted economic compensation to displaced families, farmers, daily-wage laborers, and cattle owners.
7. Independent Audit: Mandate a comprehensive performance review by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) regarding the state’s disaster readiness and the alleged diversion of the contingency fund.

Speaking to journalists, Yadav alleged that the state government withdrew ₹4,000 crore from the contingency fund ahead of the monsoon for general administrative expenses, depleting the state treasury. He argued that while high-level surveys are being conducted via aerial tours, grassroots relief remains absent, underscoring the need for the Prime Minister to assess ground realities directly.
