Visual artist and photographer Raihan Vadra announced on Wednesday that several of his photographs capturing recent Delhi street demonstrations were removed by the management of Bikaner House just prior to his solo show. The exhibition, titled “No Idea is Final,” was scheduled to open publicly on Thursday after an initial Wednesday preview. According to the artist, the venue’s administration issued an ultimatum on Wednesday afternoon, warning that the event would be called off entirely if the designated images were not cleared by 5:00 PM. Following the directive, venue authorities proceeded to unmount dozens of exhibits. Exhibition Layout Altered Over 70 photographs were unmounted from two primary galleries on the first floor of the CCA building at Bikaner House, leaving wall spaces empty along displays containing the Preamble of the Indian Constitution. While approximately 40 works remain on view—spanning street photography, wildlife, and abstract subjects—roughly half of the originally curated pieces were taken down. The exhibition is scheduled to remain open through Sunday. Artist and Family Reactions Raihan Vadra on Documentation: Vadra stated that the removed images were neutral visual chronicles of youth demonstrations over the preceding six months, rather than partisan commentary. He mentioned that venue authorities cited the broader political climate as the reason for the withdrawal, which also included a frame depicting the Indian national flag. He added that the full layout and proposal had been cleared in advance with the facility’s team. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s Response: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra strongly criticized the venue’s decision, calling it an attempt to muzzle young artists and suppress creative expression. She noted that the documentary photos contained no defamatory or commentary elements and warned that such censorship sets a concerning precedent for cultural institutions. Administrative Silence: Representatives at Bikaner House declined to comment on the matter, noting that they were not authorized to issue public statements.
