Tamil Nadu CM Vijay Issues Stern Warning on Misogynistic Remarks Amid Political Tensions

CHENNAI — Addressing the State Legislative Assembly, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay issued a stern warning against making defamatory or abusive comments targeting women, emphasizing that freedom of speech must not be misused for political malice.

Reflecting on his journey from cinema to governance, Vijay attributed a major part of his electoral success and public support to women. He stressed that while political debate and criticism are essential in a democracy, crossing lines into personal denigration or misogynistic speech would invite legal action.

“Speech is an individual right, but we must be conscious of how freedom of expression is exercised. In recent times, we have witnessed an unsettling surge in obscenity and malice across public discourse. The public is taking note of those who use double- or triple-meaning remarks against women. Everyone has mothers and sisters at home; speech should reflect that basic respect. The law will take its strict course against anyone engaging in such behavior,” the Chief Minister stated during his address.

The remarks follow recent political friction sparked by controversial comments allegedly directed at actor Trisha by Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin during a public gathering. Stalin was briefly detained following complaints before securing relief from the Madras High Court. The DMK rejected the accusations, alleging political vendetta and maintaining that the audio was selectively clipped and misrepresented out of context.

Drawing a historical parallel inside the House, Vijay referenced past assembly incidents where former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa faced public humiliation, reiterating that the public actively observes and rejects disrespectful conduct toward women in public life.

Following the Assembly session, Udhayanidhi Stalin countered the Chief Minister’s statements to reporters, claiming that the ruling party made unverified claims on the floor of the House while denying the Opposition an opportunity to respond.

“The Chief Minister spoke about the police administration initially, which we observed without disruption. However, he subsequently leveled unsubstantiated allegations against our party without presenting evidence. We requested time from the Speaker to respond, but the floor was denied to us. Allegations without proof cannot substitute for facts,” Stalin stated.
