Jannik Sinner proved why he’s world No.1, digging deep to defend his Wimbledon title with a gritty four-set win over Alexander Zverev on Sunday. After dropping a tight first set, Sinner steadied and took control to win 6-7 (7-9), 7-6 (7-2), 6-3, 6-4 in 3 hours and 46 minutes on Centre Court. The victory gives the 24-year-old Italian his second straight Wimbledon trophy and fifth Grand Slam overall. It also marks his 100th career win at the majors. With the win, he moves to within two Slams of injured rival Carlos Alcaraz. Sinner was ruthless on the big points. He fired 58 winners to just 25 unforced errors and broke Zverev late in the fourth to seal it. He finished the match with a forehand winner on his first championship point, then dropped to the grass in celebration. The path wasn’t easy. Sinner was pushed to five sets by Miomir Kecmanovic in round one. Since then he hasn’t looked back, and now sits at 44-3 for the year with six titles. For Zverev, it was still a breakthrough Wimbledon. He entered the final on a 13-match Grand Slam winning streak after finally winning his first major at the French Open last month. He also took the first set off Sinner for the first time in seven meetings. But his 10-match losing streak against Sinner continued. Despite the loss, Zverev will rise to No.2 in the ATP rankings on Monday, passing Alcaraz. He was chasing history too — aiming to become the first German man to win Wimbledon since Michael Stich in 1991.After a shock second-round exit at Roland Garros, Sinner has flipped the script on grass. Calm, clinical, and now a two-time Wimbledon champion.
