Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios has received a provisional suspension after testing positive for cocaine during an ATP 250 tournament in Mallorca, Spain, in June 2026. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) lab confirmed the presence of benzoylecgonine, a metabolite of cocaine, in a sample provided on June 22, leading the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) to issue a mandatory provisional suspension effective August 4, 2026.

Taking to Instagram to address the situation directly, the 31-year-old former Wimbledon finalist acknowledged his actions without making excuses. He cited the severe physical and mental toll of recurring injuries and the struggle of confronting the end of his professional career as factors contributing to his state of mind. Kyrgios apologized to his fans, family, sponsors, and young supporters, announcing a 28-day break from social media and public life to focus on personal recovery.

Key Context & Anti-Doping Regulations

  • ITIA Process: The length of Kyrgios’s official ban remains to be determined, pending whether the substance was ingested in or out of competition.
  • WADA Substance Rules: Under updated anti-doping guidelines, out-of-competition use of substances of abuse like cocaine carries a three-month ban, which can be reduced to one month if the athlete completes an approved rehabilitation program.
  • Career Background: The controversial Australian reached a career-high ranking of No. 13 in 2016 and made the 2022 Wimbledon final. His court appearances have been severely limited by injuries in recent years.
