Lahore — Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has said he wishes to become the Prime Minister of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), stating that it would allow him to personally oversee development work in the region. The statement was made on Tuesday during an election rally in Muzaffarabad. Sharif, who is also President of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), was joined by his daughter and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. What Nawaz Sharif Said Addressing the gathering, Sharif said PoK is as dear to him as his home province of Punjab. “This is my second home. My ancestors came from Kashmir. If my party wins, I will ask Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to make me the Prime Minister of PoK, so that I can personally supervise development projects there,” he said. He used the rally to launch PML-N’s campaign for the upcoming PoK elections, and appealed to voters by referencing his family’s alleged links to the region. PoK has witnessed prolonged protests against Pakistan in recent years. PoK Elections Schedule Elections in PoK are scheduled to be held between July 27 and August 10. India’s Stand India maintains that Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh are integral and inalienable parts of India. New Delhi has repeatedly stated that Pakistan is in “illegal and forcible occupation” of parts of these Union Territories. India has also objected to Pakistan holding elections in PoK and Gilgit-Baltistan in the past, and does not recognize the so-called legislative assemblies in those areas. Recently, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah said representatives of the United Nations should visit PoK to see the situation on the ground so the world can understand the ground realities there.
