On the seventh day of Shardiya Navratri, devotees worship Maa Kalaratri, the fiercest manifestation of Goddess Durga. According to the Hindu calendar (Panchang), the Saptami Tithi of the Shukla Paksha in Ashwin month is dedicated to Maa Kalaratri. Worshipping this fierce yet protective form is believed to eliminate planetary obstacles, dispel negative energies, and bestow peace, courage, and prosperity upon seekers.

Shardiya Navratri 2026 Saptami Dates & Auspicious Muhurat

Due to the alignment of the lunar calendar and the Udaya Tithi (sunrise calculation), Saptami falls across two consecutive days:

  • Saptami Tithi Begins: October 17, 2026, at 05:54 AM
  • Saptami Tithi Ends: October 18, 2026, at 08:28 AM

Because the Saptami tithi touches sunrise on both days, Maa Kalaratri puja can be observed on October 17 and October 18, 2026.

Key Muhurat Timings (Approximate)

  • Brahma Muhurat: 04:52 AM – 05:40 AM
  • Abhijit Muhurat: 11:49 AM – 12:35 PM
  • Amrit Kaal: None during daytime hours

(Note: Exact timings vary slightly depending on geographical coordinates and local sunrise times.)

Appearance and Significance of Maa Kalaratri

Maa Kalaratri is depicted with a dark complexion as deep as the night sky, dishevelled hair, and four hands.

  • Form and Mount: She rides a donkey (gardabh).
  • Weapons and Postures: Her left upper hand wields a curved iron scimitar (khadga), and the lower left holds a lethal iron spiked hook or thorn-like weapon. Her right hands display the Abhaya (fearlessness) and Varada (boon-giving) mudras, reassuring devotees.
  • Symbolism: Despite her terrifying appearance, she is known as Shubhankari (the bringer of good), assuring her devotees that they need not fear her wrath, which is directed solely at evil forces, demons, and negative influences.

Puja Vidhi (Step-by-Step Ritual)

  1. Purification: Wake during Brahma Muhurat, take a bath, and dress in clean clothes (preferably blue, dark red, or purple).
  2. Sanctify the Altar: Clean the home temple or puja space, sprinkle Gangajal, and venerate the established Kalash and Ganesha first.
  3. Invocation: Place an idol or portrait of Maa Kalaratri. Offer red vermillion (kumkum), raw rice grains (akshat), red hibiscus flowers, and a fresh garland.
  4. Sacred Lamp: Light a pure ghee lamp and aromatic incense.
  5. Sacred Chants: Recite the Durga Saptashati, chant the Maa Kalaratri Stotram, and read the day’s Vrat Katha.

  7. Aarti & Prayer: Perform the Aarti using camphor, followed by prayers seeking protection, health, and family well-being.
