Captain Smit Machchhar, an Indian aviator with flydubai, has garnered international acclaim for averting an aviation catastrophe mid-flight on a journey from Dubai to Tel Aviv. World leaders, including Indian President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and U.S. President Donald Trump, commended the pilot’s swift actions that safeguarded all 174 passengers—among them 27 children—and crew aboard. The incident occurred on September 30, 2026, when the first officer reportedly attacked Captain Machchhar with a sharp weapon in an alleged attempt to down the airliner. Despite sustaining injuries, Machchhar, assisted by alert cabin crew and passengers, managed to overpower the assailant and maintain control of the aircraft, ensuring a safe outcome. Aviation and security officials are currently investigating the circumstances and motive behind the co-pilot’s assault.
