Rohit Sharma has officially announced his retirement from One Day Internationals, closing the book on an 18-year ODI career that redefined how India opens.

The announcement came quietly, the way Rohit does everything. No drama. Just a statement, a thank you, and 18 years of memories.

The Journey

From that nervous debut in 2007 to becoming “The Hitman”, Rohit leaves ODIs with:

  • 3 double centuries — a world record
  • 10,000+ runs for India
  • Captain of 2023 World Cup finalists
  • That 264 — still the highest individual ODI score ever

“Playing for India in the blue jersey has been the biggest honor,” Rohit said. “It’s time for the next generation to take this forward.”

Why Now?

At 39, with the 2027 World Cup 18 months away, Rohit said he wants to make space for young openers and focus on mentoring. He’ll continue to be involved with Indian cricket in a different role.

The Legacy

Rohit didn’t just score runs. He made ODI batting look easy. Lazy elegance. Sixes that didn’t look like sixes. Captaincy that trusted gut over data.

Fans aren’t saying goodbye. They’re saying thank you.

As one post on X put it: “We grew up watching him. Now we’ll tell our kids about him.”
