Delhi residents who have borewells at home could soon be billed for the groundwater they use. The Delhi government has drafted a new borewell policy to curb illegal extraction of groundwater in the city. Officials said the draft mandates water meters on all domestic and commercial borewells. It also proposes a mechanism to regularize the thousands of illegal borewells running across Delhi. Under the new rules, users will be charged based on actual water consumption recorded by the meters. The government, however, is yet to finalize groundwater usage rates.
