ITR Filing Last Date Update: If you haven’t filed your Income Tax Return yet, there’s some relief for certain taxpayers. The government has extended the ITR filing deadline for some categories from 31st July to 31st August 2026. Yes, you now get an extra month.

Note: This extension is not for everyone.

Who Gets the Extended Deadline?

Under the new rule, taxpayers with business or professional income who are not required to get a tax audit can now file their ITR by 31st August 2026

This mainly includes eligible taxpayers filing ITR-3 and ITR-4. Some trusts will also benefit from this extended timeline.

What About Salaried Individuals?

No change for salaried people.

If you file ITR-1 or ITR-2, your last date remains 31st July 2026. Filing after that may attract late fees and other penalties.

Why Was the Deadline Extended?

The government said this change is to give non-audit business cases and trusts more time to prepare accounts and required documents. This will make the filing process easier and reduce last-minute rush.

What Happens If You File Late?

If you miss your category’s deadline and file later, you may face:

  • Late filing fees
  • Interest charges
  • Loss of some tax benefits

So it’s best to file your return before the applicable date for your category.
