New Delhi: All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi has moved the Supreme Court, challenging the ongoing methodology of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Questioning the manner in which the verification drive is being executed, Owaisi has sought an urgent hearing before the top court.

Plea Mentioned Before Bench Led by Chief Justice

Advocate Nizamuddin Pasha, representing Owaisi, mentioned the petition before a bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi.

The counsel requested the bench to tag Owaisi’s petition along with other similar, previously listed matters concerning the SIR process that were scheduled for hearing on Thursday, October 15. The bench stated that it would look into the request to list the petition alongside related SIR matters, though a formal order tagging it for the specified date remains to be confirmed.

Understanding the SIR Exercise

The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) is a detailed ground-level auditing and verification mechanism designed to update, verify, and correct voter registries. While aimed at eliminating duplicate entries and updating constituency lists, the procedure has drawn scrutiny and objections from several political entities across states over its execution and potential disenfranchisement risks.

All eyes are now on the Supreme Court’s assessment regarding the procedural fairness of the revision drive as it decides on hearing the batch of petitions.
