India is well-positioned to achieve $1 trillion in total exports for fiscal year 2026–27 despite sluggish global trade conditions, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal stated on Thursday. The target represents an approximate 16 percent increase over the previous year’s record total of $863 billion.

Addressing a preview session for the 31st Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Partnership Summit, Goyal expressed strong confidence based on first-half trade performance. He emphasized that India is setting this ambitious benchmark even as global economic growth is projected to remain under 3 percent, with international trade expanding by only 2.5 to 3 percent.

Goyal credited the momentum to India’s domestic enterprise base, highlighting 63 million micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), an expanding network of Global Capability Centres (GCCs), and roughly 250,000 active startups. Commerce Ministry data estimates India’s total exports between April and August at approximately $399.27 billion.

Trade Pacts and Market Access

A key driver behind the export strategy has been proactive trade diplomacy. Over the past four and a half years, India has finalized nine Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) spanning 38 developed economies, representing an aggregate GDP of nearly $60 trillion. In comparison, trade pacts signed before 2014 covered partner economies with a combined global GDP share of roughly $10 trillion.

Goyal pointed out that India has shifted from a defensive trade posture to an active engagement strategy. These trade frameworks have opened market access for agricultural commodities, marine exports, and engineering and electronic goods produced by smaller firms, while maintaining safeguards for sensitive domestic sectors such as farming, fishing, and MSMEs.

Broader Economic Momentum

Referencing the Reserve Bank of India’s revised growth projection of 7.1 percent, Goyal projected GDP growth to comfortably exceed 7 percent this year. He reiterated long-term targets, projecting India’s economy to expand from $4 trillion toward $30 trillion by 2047.

At the same event, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu announced that the state will introduce an escrow account mechanism for industrial incentives during the upcoming partnership summit scheduled for November 12–13 in Visakhapatnam.
