LOS ANGELES — The popular animated universe of Avatar: The Last Airbender is officially branching out into an earlier era. Franchise creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko revealed a brand-new animated prequel series, titled Avatar Kuruk: Wave of Chaos, during a presentation at New York Comic Con. The upcoming show centers on the younger years of Avatar Kuruk, a free-spirited, rebellious teenage Water Tribe Avatar navigating the responsibilities of mastering the four elements. Fans attending the convention were treated to early concept reveals featuring Kuruk alongside his companion creature, Nikik. According to a release from Skydance, the storyline follows Kuruk’s misadventures as he stays ahead of demanding mentors, unruly pirates, and unpredictable spirits while finding his own unconventional path toward preserving balance across the four nations. The animated production will stream globally on Paramount+, though a formal premiere date has yet to be scheduled. The announcement adds another major pillar to the franchise’s growing canon, which originated with the 2005 Nickelodeon series and subsequently expanded with The Legend of Korra and Avatar: Seven Havens. Skydance also confirmed that Avatar: Seven Havens has received a greenlight for two additional seasons. DiMartino and Konietzko originally helped initiate Netflix’s live-action version before departing the project over creative directions in 2020. The duo then established Avatar Studios in collaboration with Nickelodeon in 2021 to steer, oversee, and create a broader slate of animated movies and series set within the elemental fantasy world.
