NEW DELHI — Authorities placed central New Delhi under a heavy security clampdown on Saturday, deploying thousands of police and paramilitary personnel, closing key metro stations, cutting off mobile internet, and shuttering markets to preempt a major youth demonstration calling for the resignation of India’s Chief Election Commissioner.

The planned rally, organized by the youth-driven group “Cockroach Janta Party” under the banner “Save Democracy,” seeks the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Organizers expect thousands of demonstrators over allegations surrounding a contentious voter roll revision that critics claim unfairly benefits the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Tensions flared following media reports alleging internal dissent within the Election Commission over the revision exercise, which saw an estimated 130 million names purged from electoral registries. While the opposition has renewed charges of voter roll manipulation, both the Election Commission and the BJP have firmly rejected the accusations, with the ruling party arguing that its electoral victories stem from economic progress and prime ministerial popularity rather than administrative bias.

The demonstrations mark a fresh wave of public unrest for the government, coming on the heels of earlier student-led protests over competitive exam irregularities and arriving ahead of crucial state assembly elections slated for early 2027.

Organizers intended to assemble at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi’s designated demonstration zone. However, local law enforcement refused permission for the gathering, citing procedural delays, alleged past violations, and the necessity of preserving public order. Authorities issued stern warnings of legal action against anyone defying the prohibitory orders.

Movement across the capital ground to a halt as officials implemented preemptive containment measures. Several incoming train services were halted, 57 metro stations were closed, and mobile internet connectivity was suspended within a 4-kilometer perimeter surrounding the planned demonstration venue through Saturday night. Despite the restrictions, protest leaders insisted on proceeding with the demonstration, describing peaceful assembly as a fundamental democratic right.
