Security forces in New Delhi and Mumbai moved quickly on Friday to thwart planned demonstrations led by the youth-driven Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), student groups, and opposition figures. In central Delhi, hundreds of police and paramilitary officers cordoned off the Jantar Mantar area. Demonstrators were intercepted and loaded into waiting buses almost as soon as they reached the venue. To restrict movement, officials shut down at least 11 surrounding metro stations and broadcast dispersal orders over public address systems. Delhi Police also enforced Section 163, prohibiting assemblies of five or more people, sloganeering, and public speeches. By mid-afternoon, more than 500 individuals had been detained in the capital, among them former Delhi Chief Minister Atishi and various members of the Aam Aadmi Party and student unions. In Mumbai, authorities set up strict security cordons and parking restrictions around Shivaji Park ahead of a scheduled afternoon gathering. The latest wave of unrest follows investigative reports indicating that two election commissioners had repeatedly questioned internal procedures regarding voter registration revisions and digital database management over the past ten months. Opposition critics argue that the recent nationwide voter-verification drive improperly stripped millions of valid voters from the rolls to benefit the governing party. The Election Commission has rejected these accusations, stating the exercise strictly aimed to purge duplicate, deceased, and ineligible entries. CJP leadership affirmed that protests will escalate across the country until Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar steps down, with the Indian National Congress planning its own demonstrations starting next week. The movement—which originated as satirical online commentary before transitioning into street-level civil action—previously mobilized large-scale rallies in July that contributed to the resignation of the federal education minister.
