On the eve of Gandhi Jayanti, President Droupadi Murmu paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi on his 157th birth anniversary, emphasizing that his core teachings of peace, harmony, and non-violence carry heightened significance amid widespread global unrest and conflict.

In an official message to the nation, the President noted that Mahatma Gandhi’s enduring ideals continue to command deep respect internationally. She pointed out that ongoing regional tensions and armed conflicts worldwide affect all countries, making the Gandhian path of dialogue and non-violent resolution more vital than ever.

Turning to domestic progress, President Murmu highlighted India’s drive toward becoming a developed nation (‘Viksit Bharat’) by 2047. She stressed that national development must remain anchored in empathy, equity, and inclusion, ensuring every citizen reaps the benefits of progress. According to the President, this inclusive approach embodies Gandhi’s vision of ‘Sarvodaya’—the comprehensive welfare and empowerment of all sections of society. She called upon citizens across the country to dedicate themselves to shaping a self-reliant (‘Atmanirbhar’) and ethical nation through active civic contribution. Mahatma Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar, Gujarat, and his birth anniversary is observed across India and globally as the International Day of Non-Violence.
