In the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections for 10 seats in Uttar Pradesh, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) holds sufficient numbers to secure seven seats independently, while the Samajwadi Party (SP) can comfortably win two. However, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav has indicated that his party may field a third candidate, setting up a competitive contest that could trigger cross-voting.

During a legislative party meeting on Monday to discuss contenders for the Rajya Sabha and Legislative Council elections, senior leader Prof. Ram Gopal Yadav emerged as the consensus frontrunner for re-nomination. Party leaders also discussed former Uttar Pradesh Chief Secretary Alok Ranjan, veteran leader Salim Iqbal Sherwani, and several Dalit representatives under the party’s PDA (Pichhda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak) outreach framework. While Yadav refrained from confirming the final list—noting clarity would emerge once nomination papers are purchased on Tuesday—he hinted that the third nomination would feature a prominent name.

The 10 seats falling vacant comprise eight currently held by the BJP, one by the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), and one by the SP. The BSP lacks the legislative strength to mount a challenge, leaving the electoral contest primarily between the ruling BJP and the SP.

Voting Mathematics and Key Contenders

  • Primary Candidates: Prof. Ram Gopal Yadav is widely seen as a certainty. Alok Ranjan, who previously contested in February 2024, is viewed as a strong second contender. Salim Iqbal Sherwani—a five-time Member of Parliament from Badaun who reconciled with the SP ahead of the 2024 general election—is under serious consideration as well.
  • The Victory Threshold: Electing a single Rajya Sabha member requires 37 first-preference votes. Securing two seats demands 74 votes.
  • SP’s Arithmetic: On paper, the SP has 101 legislators. After factoring out six MLAs who rebelled in past elections, the loyal base stands at roughly 95. Factoring in support from Maharaji Prajapati, Apna Dal (Kamerawadi) leader Pallavi Patel, two Congress legislators from the INDIA bloc, and potential backing from breakaway legislators, the SP projects a potential pool exceeding 100 votes.
  • Surplus Leverage: With approximately 30 surplus votes available after securing two guaranteed seats, fielding a third candidate allows the SP to target fence-sitting and cross-voting legislators to challenge for an extra berth.
