8th Pay Commission Consults Staff Unions and Pensioners in Chennai, Puducherry Next on Tour

The 8th Central Pay Commission (CPC) has commenced consultations in Tamil Nadu, holding scheduled meetings with employee unions, pensioner federations, and key stakeholders in Chennai on September 7–8, before heading to the Union Territory of Puducherry on September 9. Slots have been allocated specifically to pre-registered representative bodies that submitted formal appointment requests by the August 18 deadline.

Headed by former Supreme Court Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, the commission features former IAS officer Pankaj Jain as Member-Secretary and EAC-PM member Prof. Pulak Ghosh. The panel’s ultimate findings will impact over 1.15 crore people, encompassing approximately 50 lakh active central government personnel and roughly 65 lakh pensioners across civil, railway, and defense sectors.

• Allowance Rationalization: Structural revisions to House Rent Allowance (HRA), city compensatory allowances, and travel reimbursements.

The Chennai and Puducherry engagements are part of a nationwide series of localized stakeholder hearings:

• Chandigarh (September 16–18): Consultations with delegations representing central staff from Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Chandigarh.
