Delaware Becomes Latest U.S. State to Declare August 15 as India Day

Delaware has officially joined states like New York and New Jersey in designating August 15 to honor Indian heritage and community achievements. Delaware Governor Matt Meyer issued a proclamation stating that the state’s strength stems from its cultural diversity, specifically commending the rapidly growing Indian-American community for its leadership, public service, and economic contributions.

Prior to Delaware’s announcement:

• New York: The state legislature passed a resolution declaring August 15 as India Independence Day, celebrating the diaspora’s role in local social and economic life.
• New Jersey: Issued similar state-level recognitions honoring Indian culture and community impact.

These official declarations coincide with celebrations marking India’s 80th Independence Day. Across the United States, Indian embassies, consulates, and local community groups host flag-hoisting ceremonies, cultural parades, and public events to mark the occasion.
