Chennai Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting necessary Constitutional amendments to permanently fix the total number of Lok Sabha seats at 543 and freeze state-wise distribution at current levels. The appeal follows a resolution passed by the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on August 12, 2026, addressing concerns regarding upcoming delimitation exercises and the 33 percent women’s reservation mandate. Assembly Resolution & Key Demands In his letter, CM Vijay forwarded the formal house resolution and highlighted two primary demands: Permanent Seat Freeze: Cap total Lok Sabha strength at 543 and maintain the current distribution of seats across all states without reduction. Women’s Reservation: Ensure the immediate implementation of one-third seat reservation for women in the next Lok Sabha general elections and subsequent state assembly polls. Demographics and the Delimitation Concern The resolution pointed out historical precedent, noting that during the 1967 realignment, Tamil Nadu’s representation dropped from 41 to 39 seats. Assembly deliberations emphasized that applying raw population figures post-1971 for seat recalculations would unfairly penalize progressive states. “Any delimitation based on post-1971 population that alters the existing strength would cause lasting injustice to Southern States,” the resolution noted, emphasizing that these states have actively achieved economic growth, maintained robust public welfare systems, and successfully executed national population control policies.
