The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed on Monday that 51 out of 227 Indian nationals recruited into the Russian armed forces have lost their lives, while 139 have been successfully discharged from service. The Indian government is actively coordinating with Moscow to ensure the safe return of the remaining personnel. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri shared these details during an MEA briefing on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Kyrgyzstan, addressing queries regarding Indians serving in the Russian military. Ongoing Diplomatic Discussions Foreign Secretary Misri stated that India has consistently raised the issue of its citizens’ military recruitment with Russian authorities across various official channels. According to official data, out of the 227 identified Indian recruits, 139 have been relieved of their duties, and 51 casualties have been verified. Misri emphasized that the Indian Embassy in Moscow is closely tracking the situation and collaborating with Russian officials to secure the immediate release and repatriation of all surviving Indian nationals. Bilateral Meeting in Bishkek The statement coincides with a bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Bishkek. During the discussions, Prime Minister Modi reiterated the need for global diplomacy to move away from prolonged conflicts toward peaceful resolutions, alongside reviewing bilateral cooperation and regional developments.
