New Delhi — A four-storey building tilted in East Delhi’s Geeta Colony on Monday evening, prompting a rescue operation to evacuate all residents safely. Police shared details on Tuesday. What Happened The incident took place in “Akhade Wali Gali” in Geeta Colony. According to police, the area around the building has been cordoned off and residents of nearby houses have been advised to stay away. All people living in the building were evacuated safely, including an elderly woman who suffered a spinal injury and could not get up on her own. Eyewitness Account Local residents said the canopy above the second-floor balcony collapsed due to rain, after which they noticed the building starting to lean. Local resident Ravi said: “The building is tilting. The entire building has gone crooked.” He added that an elderly woman and her son lived on the second floor. “The woman had a spinal injury and couldn’t get up herself. We weren’t sure if her son was inside. We tried going up but couldn’t see anyone,” Ravi said late Monday evening. Earlier Complaints Ignored Residents claimed they had complained to authorities about the building’s condition before. “We had filed complaints earlier. Police also came, made videos and took photos, but no action was taken,” Ravi said. He added that the building is about 30-35 years old. The building is visibly leaning to one side at the intersection of two narrow lanes lined with attached houses. Police personnel are keeping people away from the structure.
