Chess is one of the world’s oldest and most intellectual games. More than entertainment, it builds strategy, logic, patience, focus, and decision-making. Every move teaches planning and using limited resources wisely. That’s why it’s called “the game of kings” and “the school of strategy.”

Why 20 July?

International Chess Day is celebrated on 20 July to mark the founding of FIDE in 1924. In 2019, the United Nations officially recognized it as a day to promote education, peace, social inclusion, and sustainable development.

India: The Birthplace

Most historians agree chess began in India as ‘Chaturanga’ around the 6th century. From India it traveled to Persia, Arabia, and then Europe, evolving into modern chess. Today, it’s a matter of pride that this global game of intellect has Indian roots.

The Message

Chess is not just a game. It teaches discipline, creativity, and smart decision-making. As India leads in both heritage and performance, the goal should be to promote chess in schools and communities to build sharper, more responsible citizens.
