The tradition of exchanging festive greetings during Diwali has undergone a significant transformation over the decades. The heartfelt warmth once conveyed through handmade paper cards and printed greetings has largely migrated to smartphone screens, social media platforms, and AI-generated visuals.

The Nostalgic Era of Handcrafted Cards

A few decades ago, the arrival of the festive season saw children and youth spending days crafting personalized cards using colored sheets, sketch pens, and paints. Adorned with hand-drawn earthen lamps, rangoli motifs, and floral patterns, each card carried handwritten messages filled with emotion. Delivering them in person or mailing them through the postal system was an essential ritual of the celebration. Recipients often treasured these tokens of affection for years, preserving a deep sense of personal connection.

The Rise of Commercial Greetings and Postal Traditions

With changing lifestyles and busier routines, commercially printed greeting cards began replacing handmade creations. During the festive rush, gift and stationery stores witnessed heavy foot traffic as shoppers browsed through countless designs and quotes to find the right match for each friend and relative. Writing custom notes inside these cards and dispatching them via post or courier remained an integral festive custom.

The Shift to Instant Digital Wishes

In today’s digital era, festive greetings have become virtually instantaneous. Physical cards have made way for WhatsApp messages, Instagram reels, animated media, and AI-generated Diwali artwork. Through a single broadcast message or a social media status update, one can now transmit festive greetings to hundreds of contacts in a fraction of a second.

A Changing Marketplace

Arvind Rakwal, a gift shop owner operating in Dharamshala’s Civil Lines area, observes that customer demand for greeting cards has plummeted over the last decade. He notes that while people previously formed queues outside shops to pick festive cards, modern consumers—particularly younger generations—rely almost entirely on digital channels. Broadcasts and status updates have superseded physical purchases, shrinking the commercial market for paper cards to a fraction of its former size.

While modern technology offers unmatched speed and convenience across long distances, the nostalgic charm, handwritten care, and personal touch of tangible greeting cards still hold a special place in the memories of many.
