The Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI) Students’ Union and alumni association joined hands at the Kolkata Press Club during a “Save SRFTI” briefing, screening footage of the unrest ongoing since late September and demanding an impartial investigation into campus violence.

Three Core Demands and Independent Inquiry

The alumni and student bodies presented three immediate conditions to restore normalcy on the Kolkata campus:

  • Immediate revocation of all show-cause notices, suspensions, rustications, and punitive actions initiated against students.
  • Total withdrawal of police deployments from within the institutional premises.
  • Re-engagement in institutional dialogue supported by an independent investigation into the violent clashes that occurred on September 27 and October 4.

The alumni announced the formation of a civil-society fact-finding committee composed of eminent figures to collect depositions from all eyewitnesses and stakeholders, welcoming the administration to nominate representatives to the panel.

Key Grievances and By-Law Reforms

Alumni members, including cinematographers Basab Mullik and Manas Bhattacharyya, alongside filmmakers Anirban Datta and Raka Dutta, voiced strong solidarity with the agitating students. They criticized the administration for booking and rusticating students while failing to take strict action against outside attackers who trespassed onto campus.

The students’ charter further calls for:

  • Leadership Accountability: The formal resignation of Vice-Chancellor Santosh Ajmera.
  • Scrutiny of Venue Permissions: A probe into how an RSS-affiliated group was permitted to host an event inside the institute’s Main Theatre.
  • Policy Amendments: Revisions to institute by-laws ensuring campus infrastructure is leased solely to organizations directly tied to cinema and media, following mandatory stakeholder consultations.

Administrative Response

Rejecting the allegations, SRFTI Registrar Deepak Kumar contended that the union’s footage presented a selective narrative. He clarified that disciplinary steps were taken strictly against identifiable acts of intimidation, assault, and misconduct rather than peaceful protests, adding that institutional initiatives for female security, cyber-safety, and mental health support remain ongoing.

Vice-Chancellor Santosh Ajmera stated that faculty representatives continue to reach out to the student community to address genuine grievances, maintaining optimism that academic operations will resume swiftly through constructive dialogue.
