On the fourth day of Shardiya Navratri, devotees worship Maa Kushmanda, the fourth manifestation of Goddess Durga. According to Hindu belief, Maa Kushmanda created the universe with her gentle smile, earning her the title of Adishakti (the primordial cosmic energy). Her worship is associated with vitality, prosperity, and the removal of darkness.

Significance and Form of Maa Kushmanda

Maa Kushmanda is depicted with eight hands and is often revered as Ashtabhuja Devi.

  • Sacred Attributes: She holds a water pot (kamandalu), bow, arrow, lotus, pot of nectar (amrit kalash), discus (chakra), mace (gada), and a rosary (japa mala) that bestows eight siddhis and nine nidhis.
  • Mount (Vahana): She rides a lion, symbolizing courage, strength, and authority.
  • Cosmic Role: Residing at the core of the Sun, she provides energy, radiance, and life to the cosmos, blessing devotees with strength, health, and confidence.

Traditionally, Malpua is offered as the primary bhog to Maa Kushmanda. In addition, devotees offer seasonal fruits, white pumpkin (petha), and traditional sattvic sweets prepared with cleanliness and devotion. After the rituals, this prasad is distributed among family members and loved ones.
