LUCKNOW — All ten candidates contesting the Rajya Sabha elections from Uttar Pradesh were declared elected unopposed on Friday. The governing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured eight seats, while the Samajwadi Party (SP) claimed the remaining two. Returning Officer Ajit Kumar Verma officially handed over the election certificates to the newly elected members, whose terms will commence on November 26.

The election results carried deliberate caste and political messaging ahead of future state assembly contests.

Strategic Balancing in BJP’s Picks

Leveraging its numerical strength in the state assembly, the BJP successfully sent eight members to the Upper House of Parliament. Rather than fielding high-profile veterans, the party favored grassroots and organizational figures to balance key social coalitions:

  • OBC Representation (3): Dharampal Singh, Prakash Pal, Shruti Gangwar
  • Dalit Representation (2): Vidyasagar Sonkar, along with representation among female candidates
  • Brahmin Representation (2): Gopikrishna Pandey, Radhakant Ojha
  • Kshatriya Representation (1): Ram Pratap Singh
  • Women Candidates: Priyanka Singh Rawat, Shruti Gangwar

Following his election, Minister Dharampal Singh dedicated his victory certificate to the memory of former Chief Minister Kalyan Singh and paid floral tributes at the statue of freedom fighter Rani Avantibai Lodhi, emphasizing social empowerment. Candidate Prakash Pal offered prayers at the Hanuman Setu temple before meeting party officials at the state headquarters.

SP’s Unexpected Nomination

While the nomination of senior Samajwadi Party leader and National General Secretary Prof. Ram Gopal Yadav went as projected, SP President Akhilesh Yadav surprised political observers by fielding corporate executive Dhanraj Nathwani for the second seat. Nathwani is scheduled to receive his election certificate on October 12, while a representative accepted Yadav’s certificate on his behalf.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, State BJP President Pankaj Chaudhary, and State General Secretary (Organization) Dharampal Singh extended their congratulations to all the newly elected representatives.
