In a newly released campaign commercial, Michigan Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers called for an immediate conclusion to cross-border trade friction with Canada, marking another public divergence from former President Donald Trump’s trade policies ahead of the upcoming elections.

The 30-second spot, funded jointly by Rogers’ campaign and the National Republican Senatorial Committee, highlights the critical economic ties between Michigan and its northern neighbor. According to figures from the Michigan Chamber of Commerce, annual bilateral trade between the state and Canada totals approximately $80 billion.

“Here in Michigan, we know that Canada is not our enemy. We need to end this tariff war now,” Rogers states in the ad, pledging to work across party lines to curb consumer costs.

The commercial represents a notable recalibration of Rogers’ earlier rhetoric. While he previously acknowledged that targeted tariffs protect domestic manufacturing from cheap foreign competition, his latest messaging pivots toward mitigating consumer inflation and protecting supply chains vital to Michigan’s economy.

This marks the candidate’s second recent public break with standard party lines, following an earlier advertisement in which he called for a swift resolution to foreign conflicts.

Addressing reporters from the Oval Office, Trump downplayed any signs of discord, framing Rogers’ remarks as an appeal for Canada to negotiate more favorable trade terms.

Neither Rogers’ campaign nor that of his Democratic opponent immediately returned requests for comment.
