With this, the apex court now has 37 judges, just one short of its total sanctioned strength of 38.

Let’s take a look at the profiles of the three newly appointed judges.

  1. Justice Agarwal: From Allahabad HC to Supreme Court

Justice Agarwal started her career as a judge of the Allahabad High Court. She has been serving as the Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court since July 2023.

She completed her law degree from Awadh University in 1989 and began practicing law in December 1990. She was elevated as a judge in November 2011. Her tenure in the Supreme Court will continue till April 2031.

  • Justice Upadhyaya: An Experienced Legal Mind

Justice Upadhyaya studied law at Lucknow University and enrolled as an advocate in May 1991. He served as the Chief Standing Counsel for Uttar Pradesh from May 2007 till his elevation as a judge in November 2011.

In July 2023, he was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court. He was then transferred to the Delhi High Court as Chief Justice in January 2025, a position he held till his elevation to the Supreme Court.

  • Justice Singh: A Journey Across Four High Courts

Justice Singh is a law graduate from the University of Delhi. He enrolled as an advocate in 1990 and practiced at the Patna High Court till 2000, and later at the Jharkhand High Court till 2012, when he was elevated as a judge.

He also served as the Acting Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court from December 2022 to February 2023. He was sworn in as the Chief Justice of Tripura High Court on April 17, 2023, and later transferred to the Telangana High Court on July 19, 2025.

Why This Matters

With 37 out of 38 positions now filled, the Supreme Court is functioning at near full strength. This is expected to help in faster disposal of pending cases and strengthen the justice delivery system in the country.
