NEW DELHI — Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk extended his support on Sunday to an upcoming October 2 demonstration organized against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar by the Cockroach Janata Party (COJPA). He emphasized the urgent necessity of backing efforts that promote transparency and reform within the nation’s electoral framework. While endorsing the scheduled agitation, Wangchuk clarified that he will likely not participate in person. “The support is definitely there. I stand behind any effort aimed at improving accountability in our country,” Wangchuk stated. “My goal in supporting movements is to see them stand on their own feet. It is encouraging to see many people stepping forward on this matter now, and I hope my personal presence will not be necessary regarding this issue with the CEC.” Wangchuk underlined that a fair electoral process serves as the bedrock of any functioning democracy. “If the integrity of the electoral process itself is compromised, what remains of democracy?” he asked. Touching upon broader governance and trust, he added that authorities must honor commitments made to the public, citing the long-standing demand regarding Ladakh. “Promises made must be fulfilled—such as the commitment to grant Ladakh Sixth Schedule status,” he said. The demonstration is slated to begin in Mumbai on October 2 as part of COJPA’s campaign demanding institutional accountability from the Election Commission. Meanwhile, opposition parties have also intensified calls for scrutiny against the Chief Election Commissioner over concerns regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists.
