Google has introduced an experimental capability dubbed “Call for Me,” allowing its Gemini AI assistant to dial real-world businesses directly on behalf of users. The feature handles everyday calling tasks such as checking product inventory at retail outlets, booking restaurant tables, and scheduling doctor appointments.

How the Feature Operates

When activated, Gemini places the outgoing call directly from the user’s handset, displaying the user’s authentic phone number on caller ID.

Key operational details include:

  • Identification: Gemini introduces itself as an automated assistant as soon as the call connects.
  • Interactive Navigation: The AI can navigate automated phone trees (IVR menus) and wait on hold until an agent responds.
  • Data Sharing Controls: If personal information is needed to complete a request (such as booking a slot), Gemini requires explicit user authorization before sharing it.
  • Live Transcription and Takeover: Users can follow the conversation via a real-time transcript on their screen and manually assume control of the call at any moment.

Eligibility and Availability

The tool is currently running as a limited pilot in the United States. To access “Call for Me,” users must meet three specific criteria:

  1. Own a Google Pixel 11 smartphone.
  2. Maintain an active Gemini paid subscription.
  3. Install the beta release of the Google Phone app on Android.

Google noted that the controlled rollout accounts for the complex, nuanced nature of real-time human conversation, allowing the system to undergo practical testing before broader deployment. The update also reflects the broader tech transition toward autonomous, agent-based mobile workflows seen across the industry.

Building on Google’s Voice AI History

“Call for Me” represents the latest iteration in Google’s long-running series of telephony automation tools. The company first highlighted conversational phone AI with its early Google Duplex demonstrations, followed by tools like “Ask for Me” for price and service checks. It also builds on existing Pixel utilities, including “Hold for Me,” “Talk to a Live Rep,” and “Direct My Call,” which assist users in navigating phone prompts and enduring customer service wait times.
