Six Dead, Dozens Feared Trapped Following Multi-Storey Building Collapse in New Delhi

Rescue operations are underway in the Indian capital after a multi-storey building collapsed near Delhi University’s Satya Niketan area on Sunday, leaving at least six people dead and dozens trapped under the wreckage.

The structure, primarily occupied by students, caved in suddenly, prompting a rapid mobilization of local police, firefighters, and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). Emergency crews deployed earthmovers and sniffer dogs to locate survivors beneath the concrete slabs. An adjacent structure was also evacuated over structural stability concerns.

Officials from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) confirmed that six fatalities have been recorded so far. Five victims were declared dead on arrival, while another succumbed to critical injuries shortly after admission. Four other individuals remain under medical care.

Fire department official Abhilash Malik indicated that up to 40 people might still be buried under the rubble. The exact cause of the structural failure remains undetermined.

Local authorities pledged an immediate investigation, emphasizing that saving student lives remains the top priority. Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered condolences via social media, confirming ongoing federal assistance for rescue efforts.

Structural collapses become notably frequent across India during the monsoon season spanning June to September, often exacerbated by persistent rain, unpermitted construction, and lax building standard enforcement.
